I remember the first time we walked through the auditorium that was to become Open’s home. Beige ruled the day, accented by the green tinge of overhead fluorescent lights.

A full-on makeover was in store. Interestingly enough, the first in-depth conversation about the space revolved around the placement of a large gathering table in the back of the room. It would be 12 feet long and serve as the primary hospitality and welcome area for the new space.

But which way should it face? Figuring out how to orient a table so that it communicates Open’s identity meant centering the short end of the table along the wall so that it juts out into the space and allows everyone access to all sides—ensuring no hierarchy and no barriers between people—just a community gathered around a table.

Intentional thinking rooted in the poetic words of the Open Creed defined Open’s creation story. Open’s logo started with a loose idea of an Enso circle—a hand-drawn symbol from the Zen Buddhist tradition that suggests letting go of the desire for perfection and opening yourself up to creative freedom. And because Open was being created in a community of artists, the first step in the logo design process couldn’t happen on a computer. It happened with a paintbrush.
